North Melbourne banking on Josh Smith

The definite absence of Drew Petrie and the potential absence of Brendan Fevola will leave North Melbourne relying on Lachlan Hansen and, hopefully, Josh Smith to fill in the key forward roles.

"We're in a precarious situation," Cynic admitted. "Robbie Tarrant's still not up to AFL standards and with Petrie gone for the first couple of rounds, we could be a bit thin on talent up forward."

If David Hale gets the nod ahead of Smith, North may have to rely on playing emergencies to get some backup points.
